Pier’s artisan bakers wow top chefs with ‘moreish’ morsels

Frankonia the artisan bakery that brought it’s unique range of products to Hastings Pier this summer has just won a top award.

Frankonia the Bread House,  is based in Surrey and supplies its range of products to outlets across Kent and East Sussex and has just won a major national award for its Cocoa Butter Biscuits. 

Frankonia won the Biscuits and Cookies category in The Great British Food Awards, with judges saying the biscuits were: “Buttery, delicious shortbread with a chocolate flavour.” They also loved the ‘traditional, homely packaging’ and said they were so moreish they would be ordering them online soon. 

In addition, Frankonia’s Apple Crumble Muffin – a big seller on Hastings Pier – was highly commended. 

The 2020 Great British Food Awards were announced at the end of last week, and commenting on this year’s winners, Natasha Lovell-Smith, editor of Great British Food magazine and chair of the judging panel, said: “This is a remarkable and well-deserved achievement. Our judges, including The Hairy Bikers, Booths supermarket, Michel Roux Jr, Monica Galetti, William Sitwell, Olly Smith and Asma Khan, judged Frankonia products to be the best, not an easy choice in a market that is full of quality and incredible provenance.”

The Apple Crumble Muffins that were a big hit with Hastings buyers this summer.

Birgit Gunz, Frankonia’s owner and founder said:  “We always believed that our biscuits were superb – after all they are good enough to be chosen to be served at many of our top hotels.  Now that we are also supplying our product range direct to the public, this is a great fillip to our team.”
