London chamber choir Londinium entertained enthusiastic audiences in St Leonards and Bexhill over the Bank Holiday weekend with its sparkling, sea-themed programme of unaccompanied choral music Time and Tide.

It was the choir’s first tour to the South Coast and over a weekend of glorious sun and blue skies many of the choir’s members were to be found enjoying a dip in the sea between concerts.

As the choir’s performance at Christ Church St Leonards came to a close on Saturday evening with a rousing performance of Gustav Holst’s arrangements of sea shanties, a number of the 150-strong audience gave the choir a standing ovation: “I came to the Christ Church concert tonight and was blown away,” wrote one member of the audience on the choir’s Facebook page, “Well done to everyone. Bravo!”

A review from The Lark said of the concert: “The 38 member choir’s singing was balanced, distinct, harmonious, controlled and enchanting.

“… It was beautiful to watch and hear.”

Londinium’s Sunday evening performance at St Augustine’s Church, Bexhill-on-Sea was a fundraising concert, raising money towards the church’s chosen charities.

The choir’s next concert, Beyond the Night Sky is on Friday October 11th at the church of St John’s, Waterloo in London and travels further afield thematically, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing with a celestially themed programme of music by Victoria, Reger, Steve Martland, Eriks Esenvalds, James MacMillan, Cheryl Frances-Hoad and Barnaby Martin.
