Hastings performer Esme Needham will be performing a one-woman show at Hastings Arts Forum this weekend as part of ongoing celebrations marking the 100 year anniversary of women being given the right to vote.

The play How the Vote Was Won will start at 6pm on Sunday evening and is a free performance of the 109-year-old play about women’s fight for the vote.

The play was originally written by Cicely Hamilton who also wrote the lyrics for the famous suffrage song The March of the Women and Christopher St John.

This free event is part the Protest & Thrive, an exhibition and programme of events inspired by the work of the American artist Sister Corita Kent and the protest placards of British peace activist Richard Crump: https://tinyurl.com/ProtestAndThriveEvents.

Esme says: “This play is a funny and insightful look at the roles of women in the early 20th century. I think modern audiences will be surprised by the humour and humanity that supports it throughout.”
