‘Demanding democracy’… Perry says it’s time to ‘makes vote matter’

Today is #demanddemocracyday with campaigners up and down the country making their case for why the UK should switch to a new system of voting – proportional representation.

Hastings’ former Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate Nick Perry (pictured above) is fully behind the campaign saying: “More and more people say to me that they would like to see a more diverse Council for Hastings Borough. If we had equal votes in local government, that would happen, there would be better ideas, better scrutiny and, hopefully, a more co-operative politics. What’s not to like?

“Please, let’s not waste any more time. Let’s have equal votes now, at local and national level!”

At a national level he says a new system would result in, “…a Parliament that properly reflects the votes cast by the whole country.”

The Make Votes matter website says: “Our voting system cheats most voters. Our First Past the Post voting system has never looked so broken. Once again we have a government that most people didn’t vote for, with the Conservatives winning a majority of seats on less than 44 per cent of the votes. The UK is in crisis and Parliament doesn’t reflect the way we voted.

“We urgently need to make seats match votes, with a good voting system, chosen by the people. Most people and parties agree.”
