West Hill lift repairs delayed

Plans to return the main drive wheel of the West Hill lift this morning had to be abandoned in the aftermath of storm Ciara.

Engineers had expected to crane the wheel back in to place at around 8am today following its return from a foundry in Rotherham. But with gusts of wind around 30 mph, it was too windy for the work to go ahead.

The forecast is for strong winds for several days, so the operation has been postponed until next week.

Hastings Borough Council says it still hopes that the lift will reopen before Easter.
